The Chennai Corporation and the Department of Posts are coming together to launch a facility where-in people can make their property tax payment to the Chennai Corporation at computerised post offices in the city. Currently there are over 90 computerised post offices in the Chennai Corporation limit.
This service if activated will prove very beneficial to a large numbers of assessees who do not have a bank account or cheque book. Payment of property taxes is also likely to be covered within this proposal. Under this proposal the assessee will have the option of paying the full amount of property tax, including arrears or remitting a part of the total amount of property tax demand.
The project however is expected to take off only after the Chennai Corporation and the Department of Posts arrive at an agreement on the revenue sharing model.
