New year started with story of arrest of IRS officer on bribery charge and search of home of very senior officer of DGIT-(Inv) ! The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Shreyas Bhandari along with Joint Commissioner (IT-Range VI), Chennai, Sallong Yaden, in the capital of Tamil Nadu on Saturday after monitoring them for a forthright.The two were apprehended while travelling in a car in Chennai. Rs 8 lakh cash was discovered in the automobile.Two more persons were arrested along with Bhandari and Yaden – the CBI has withheld their identities.
Bribery Heat on DGIT (Inv) Mumbai
In related action , CBI i reported to search the Mumbai home of Director General of Income Tax Investigations, Suresh Jandhyala, on Saturday night. The search operation was carried out after a city-based chartered accountant, who has alleged ties to Jandhyala,was arrested in Chennai along with IRS officer , Mr Salong in connection with a case of bribery. Media reports suggest that the bureau also searched the house of the accountant, Shreyas Bhandari, who was held along with Joint Commissioner (IT-Range VI), Chennai, Sallong Yaden, in the capital of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.
Who Are These Officers?
Jandhyala, is a 1979 batch Indian Revenue Service officer. He was earlier posted as Chief Commissioner in Hyderabad, before he was transferred to Mumbai and posted as DG (Investigations).
Salong Yaden is a 2002 batch IRS officer was posted in Chennai after being promoted as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax .
Nationwide Searches Conducted
The bureau has conducted searches at 16 places, including, Mumbai, Chennai and Assam, and seized cash and ornaments amounting to Rs 1 crore, besides 16 laptops, 13 CPUs, 9 mobile phones, 4 iPads and property papers. In Mumbai, CBI seized Rs 50 lakh cash; officials refused to divulge if this was traced to Jandhyala’s house or to Bhandari’s.
It is alleged that Bhandari’s accountancy firm sought some favourable report from Yaden in connection with the tax assessment of one of their clients and had allegedly contacted him through a senior IRS official.The Special Branch of the CBI began the probe which revealed in telephone surveillance that Jandhyala’s name figured as the one who was “in constant touch with Bhandari”, sources said.
