An Income Tax Officer, posted in Range 31(1)(2), Mumbai has been arrested today for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 75,000 from an assessee.The CBI got a complainthat the officer had demanded the bribe for reducing his assessment of income tax from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 0.55 lakh.A press release from the CBI said it had registered a case under sections 7 and 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and laid a trap.
As per the press release by CBI , the accused was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe from the complainant. Consequential ,searches have been conducted at the residential premises of the accused in Navi Mumbai, the release added.
Inspector Was Arrested in Delhi , a Few Days Ago
On 22nd march 2015 , it was reported widly by media that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested an inspector of Income Tax Department, Delhi for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 90,000 from a businessman.
A CBI press release said a case was registered under section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act,1988 on a complaint alleging that the inspector, working in Ward- 56 (3) in Income Tax Department, Delhi, had demanded a bribe of Rs. 2,50,000 from the complainant for settling the Income Tax Assessment of his client, the roprietor of a firm. Later, after negotiations, the amount was fixed at Rs 90,000.
The release said the agency laid a trap and allegedly caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 90,000 from the complainant.
Searches were conducted in the office and residence of the accused which led to recovery of incriminating documents relating to the case and investments in various movable and immovable properties, it said.The arrested accused was produced before the Special Judge, CBI cases, Patiala House Courts, New Delhi and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days, the release added.
